Engineered hardwood is constructed of a top “wear layer” of the hardwood species adhered to numerous cross-ply layers of wood or specialized cores that are dimensionally stable and resist warping or splitting. The top layer will vary in thickness depending on the product you select, but can be sanded down and refinished at least once or twice over the life of the floor. Generally speaking, the more layers of ply and the thicker the top wear layer, the higher the quality of flooring.
